Come and help teach English and other vital subjects in our partnering government run schools in Jaipur. This is your chance to fully immerse yourself within the local community and to give the amazing gift of education to the many underprivileged children that attend every day.

As a developing country, India is plagued with extreme poverty and social discrimination. Many children in and around Jaipur live on very little and it is thought that around 30% of the Indian population live below the poverty line.

The government schools we are desperately trying to help suffer from a lack of proper funding. As a result of this, students are kept in dilapidated classrooms, often being taught in large groups on the floor with little to no educational materials.

Due to the lack of structure and not enough teaching staff, many children can be found roaming the buildings unsure of what to do and with little chance of exploring their creativity and hidden talents.

Under the “Right To Education Act”, the government setup our partnering schools to provide not only a free education but also free meals. This is in hope of encouraging as many families to send their children to school as possible, instead of being forced to wander the streets begging.

Both schools we support are a part of the Rajasthan Education Department and are located in the Jagatpura slums – where our help is most needed. Each school has around 175 students attend everyday with the children aged between 5 and 16 years old.

You will be assigned to several classes throughout your day at the school, where you will be in charge of leading your own classes to around 25 children.

In a country with an ever-growing demand for employees that speak English, your help teaching will have a positive impact on their future. Your primary role will be to improve the children’s English, but this isn’t the only thing that you can teach! You will be involved in teaching other school subjects such as science, maths, history, art, physical education and geography.

Not only this, but you will have the freedom to explore other exciting areas of learning, and you don’t need to just stick to classroom all of the time! Get active and teach through dance, music and play! If you know the basics of any other languages – great! You can teach those too!

During your time in India, there will be plenty of opportunities to teach and learn around every corner. You will be working with teachers with a wealth of knowledge about Indian culture so take the opportunity to ask questions and learn about everything from traditional cooking to religion.

At first you are more than welcome to assist the local teachers and you’ll find that your confidence grows quickly and you will soon be leading your own classes! You will prepare lessons in your free time ensuring you follow the syllabus set out, so you have a clear structure to each class.

Jaipur is full of interesting things to see and do is conveniently located in the heart of the Golden Triangle. Your weekends and evenings will be free to enjoy the city and its many impressive attractions as well as travel the world famous Golden Triangle to see the Taj Mahal.

Known as the ‘pink city’, you will have plenty of time to marvel at the vast grandeur of the Amber Fort, visit the many palaces including Hawa Mahal (Water Palace) and Jal Mahal (Palace of Winds)  and of course, check out the shops and markets where you will find the most beautiful handmade items and mouth-watering cuisine.

This worthwhile programme will give you a unique insight into Indian culture and is a great opportunity for you to truly make a difference.

Activities

Although no day will ever be the same, there is a basic schedule to each day. You will typically be volunteering from 10am – 3pm with a lunch break in between Monday to Friday.

Spending your time with the children is such a rewarding experience and you will gain many lovely connections that it will be hard to say goodbye!

On your first day you will observe some classes to get an idea of how the school runs and get inspired to teach! During your time on this amazing programme you can expect to help with the following:

  • Leading your own classes to teach English and other vital subjects
  • Organising and managing outdoor recreational games
  • Planning and designing creative activities
  • Assisting staff with various tasks around the centre

The Programme

What are the requirements to join?

We welcome all volunteers from any background, religion and nationality, as long as you have no criminal convictions and are able to supply a clean criminal background check. In order to join the programme you need to be at least 16 years old on the programme start date.

Individuals need to have a good level / understanding of English but it dose not need to be your first language. As some programmes can be quite strenuous, we recommend that you should be physically fit.

What date should I arrive and leave?

You should land into Jaipur International Airport (JAI) on your selected start date, being any 1st or 3rd Saturday.

You will be met by one of our local team members or an appointed driver who will be holding a named sign. They will take you to the nearby volunteer accommodation for you to settle in.

The programme ends on a Saturday of your final week and you should depart the accommodation on this day. Our local team will be happy to help organise any onward journeys or book transport back to the airport.

Are there any age restrictions for solo travellers?

The only age restriction in place is that you have to be at least 16 years old before your programme start date. Anyone over this age is welcome. Generally the average age range for our programmes is 18 – 25, although this is by no means definitive and we regularly have volunteers of all ages.

What is the minimum age for travelling with my family?

If you are travelling with family and at least one member is aged 18 years old or over, then we welcome anyone from 5 years and up.

When should I apply for the programme?

You can apply for this programme at anytime, however we advise that you apply as soon as possible to have the best chances of securing your placement on your selected dates. Some of our programmes have limited capacity and spaces can get filled up quickly.

If you are wanting to volunteer within the next few weeks, then please contact us and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

It is possible to change your start dates once you have been accepted, however this is subject to availability and can attract a small administration fee.

What duration would you recommend?

On gaining feedback from previous volunteers, we believe 3 – 6 weeks is the ideal time to get settled in and really involved with the programme. This also allows you to make the most of your free time, to explore this beautiful country and to participate in any activities.

We regularly have volunteers come for 1 to 2 weeks that tell us that they did not believe they had enough time and wish they had stayed for longer.

What will my itinerary be?

You should land into Jaipur International Airport (JAI) on Saturday.
